Ship Repairer's Legal Liability

Overview - Ship Repairer's Legal Liability (SRLL) provides protection for contractors repairing or altering a customer's vessel at their shipyard, other locations or at sea, plus covers the insured while the customer's property is under "Care, Custody and Control" of the insured. A Commercial General Liability policy is needed for other coverages.

Typical Insureds - Vessel repairers and contractors who work on ship components.

What It Covers - The typical SRLL policy covers:

  • Liability for damage to vessels, cargo and equipment on board during repairs or alterations or while on trail trips
Underwriting Considerations:
  • Nature of work being performed
  • Receipts, payroll and subcontracting costs
  • Location
  • Security and fire protection
  • Claims history

Tip:

There can be overlaps or gaps in coverage when separate CGL and SRLL policies are purchased. The care, custody and control and watercraft exclusions of the CGL policies can sometimes be amended to provide both coverages under one policy.
